Guidelines and Warnings for Latter-Day Saints Regarding MLM Participation
1. Latter-day Saints participate heavily in MLM/network marketing. As the predominant religion in the state of Utah, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has more than its share of members Latter-day Saints (LDS) involved in MLM/network Marketing, both as participants and as founders and promoters of such programs. While not all MLM's based in Utah are LDS owned, it is assumed that the majority are controlled by Latter-day Saints. Whether or not that is the case, Utah provides a case study in who profits and who loses in MLM. You will want to read "Who Profits from Multi-Level Marketing? Preparers of Utah Tax Returns Have the Answer." 2. Several issues are faced by Latter-day Saints regarding MLM.These are summarized in Dr. Taylor's paper entitled "New Developments and Frank Answers to Key Questions Regarding Multi-Level Marketing (MLM or Endless Chain Selling) Schemes." (a special alert for LDS members.) 3. MLM and genealogy
4. The Network Marketing Game was written primarily for the LDS market.Following a one-year test of the Nu Skin program, Jon Taylor was so profoundly affected by the experience that he wrote a book about what he learned entitled THE NETWORK MARKETING GAME: Gospel Perspectives on Multi-level Marketing. The essence of the book was the challenge to readers to examine the morality of exploiting those we love for personal gain. The book received great reviews, and one editor said it received more statewide newspaper coverage than any Utah book in recent memory. Dr. Taylor also received both letters of appreciation and hate mail from all over the world. It was this feedback that led him to do the extensive research on related issues that is reported on this web site. For more information about the book, which can be obtained with Addendums for loaning out to friends and family, contact Jon Taylor directly. 5. Typical misrepresentation in Utah-based recruiting MLM's.If you have ever attended any of the hundreds of MLM "opportunity meetings in Utah (or most anywhere), read "30 Typical MLM Misrepresentations" and see if they don't sound familiar. If you have not attended these meetings, you are in for a surprise at the extent of the misrepresentations upon which recruitment – and sales of products to unwitting recruits – are based. One must conclude that these leaders, many of whom are LDS, are in severe denial of the deceptions inherent in their programs. (See # 3 above.) 6. Read "Excerpts from"Quotes Regarding the Effects of MLM (network or multi-level marketing) on LDS Participants and Families" to get some perspective on the damage done by some of these "recruiting MLM's." It is not a harmless home business, as many mistakenly believe.
PLEASE HELP! We believe this site presents information about MLM/network marketing that is as close to the truth as can be found. It can save you much time, money, and grief, as it has done for many others. And since law enforcement has essentially looked the other way on this type of consumer abuse, it is left to informed consumers to inform and warn their friends and relatives about the potential losses they could suffer from participation in a “recruiting MLM.” So please print and distribute at least 5 copies of the answer cards to those you care about – and ask each of them to share answer cards with 5 people, and each of them with 5 more, etc., etc. . . . In this way, you can influence many people for good – through an endless chain of truth-telling. Check out these handy answer cards (8 to choose from) that you can print and distribute now – as well as carry with you for those awkward moments when you are recruited by a well-meaning friend or relative.
